1. Keep up the powders, creams, soaps and shampoos so babies can’t get to them. Some are irritating to baby’s skin so you might want to think instead about natural, baby-designed products. Get all toxic cleaning products out of the bathroom cupboard or cabinet.

2. Have slide-proof protection on the floor and the bottom of the tub so baby doesn’t slip. Put a stool next to the tub so baby can get in and out with help from you. Don’t have tie backs on your shower curtains as baby can choke or strangulate on them.

3. You shouldn’t have any electrical items near the sink or bathtub. A baby is able to grab the cord and can pull the appliance into the water, causing an electrocution injury.

4. Make sure the bathroom floor is slip-proof so as to prevent slip and fall injuries.

5. Set your hot water temperature to under 120 degrees. This keeps the baby from scalding injuries. Even so, you need to check the temperature of the water before baby gets into the tub. Purchase a baby bath thermometer if you are in doubt about water temperature and set the temperature to about 95-98 degrees. Use a faucet cover to protect the baby’s head from injury.

6. Lock up the medicine chest and don’t let the baby see you taking pills. Babies think pills are candy and will try to eat them. There are special latches just for medicine chests.

7. Water as shallow as one to two inches can drown a small child. Keep attention on children and toddlers in the bathroom so they don’t do something dangerous. Keep them out of the toilet because they can drown in it. Toilet seat locks can be purchased that can keep baby out of the toilet. Always close the bathroom door when nobody is in the bathroom so baby doesn’t sneak inside.

8. Cover all electrical outlets in the bathroom so that wet fingers cannot get into the holes and cause an electrocution injury. You can use switch plates with sliders or plug covers, depending on what you are interested in.
